Former Prisoner Told How She Gave Birth In Jail While Cuffed To A Bed And Left Bleeding For Hours

Many of us tend to carry opinions about prison, but rare is the discussion of those incarcerated’ day-to-day lives. It is because there appears to be a consensus that people in jail are right where they belong. This has become an inevitable belief, but then should you know that many innocent people are also behind those walls. However, this article isn’t hinged on innocent or guilty people but on how prisoners, especially women, are treated.

An ex-inmate recently almost left people in tears as she spoke of her experience while giving birth in jail. Jessica Kent is publicly speaking of how she was left with post-traumatic stress disorder after giving birth while chained to a bed. While serving her time on remand for drug charges, Kent detoxed from pills and even methamphetamine when she discovered she was pregnant.

She served 2.5 years and had since her release being sharing experiences through TikTok and YouTube. ‘I am a recovering addict; I am sober and have been for seven years. I got arrested in 2011 on drug and gun charges and was moved to country prison. I felt sick; I was detoxing. My stomach was hurting; I was getting period cramps but not getting a period.’ Kent explained in one of her clips.

Amid serving her terms, the ex-inmate was shocked to learn that she was expecting.

On visiting medical care in prison, the ex-inmate claim she was shocked to learn that she was expecting and was even left infuriated when a guard announced it publicly. She added: ‘You don’t want people to know you’re vulnerable. Being pregnant means there’s a way to get to me; there’s a way to hurt me. Some of these people were dangerous. The jail was filled. Maybe some people were innocent; some people weren’t.’

When in labor, Kent revealed she was taken from prison to a hospital, but disappointedly things didn’t go as smoothly as they could. ‘I was terrified. I was bleeding. No one was asking me if I was ok for three hours. I sat there in active labor alone for almost three hours.’

‘But I was fortunate to get a kind correctional officer. I was 7cm dilated. My daughter was born at 3 p.m. I now have PTSD from being chained to a bed. It was the most traumatic experience.’ Kent stated. Nonetheless, Kent, who now has full custody of her daughter, is happy and healthy, and we couldn’t wish her anything less.
